Yan Ru's story

I originally started my studies in dentistry, but later discovered that compared with dentistry, accounting and finance offered a more practical career in the future – with the rational that finance plays an important role in ALL organisations, hence my switch to take up the ICAEW ACA qualification.

I was working with EY Malaysia and I admit that audit – with the opportunity to work with various clients with different organisational structure and processes - is a good starting platform to understand business and finance. Hence, with the knowledge acquired – I have moved on to help my family’s own audit practice.

I recently completed the ICAEW qualification as well – and I feel the best part of the qualification is that it drives you to succeed – the qualification is challenging, hence, it forces you to put in your best effort to excel and I employ that to my current work as well. I also feel that the compulsory Training Agreement is an advantage as it allows students to better understand how the cumulative knowledge in the ACA is employed, and the real-world knowledge I have gained from the curriculum helped me to better understand and excel in my final Advanced Level modules – and later, in my career.
