Ffion's story...

I decided to start a higher apprenticeship instead of going to university, because I would be able to qualify as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant much sooner. I also liked the idea of being able to start earning money and gaining valuable, useful knowledge and experience.

It was my sixth form tutor who suggested that I apply for a higher apprenticeship. Whilst at school, I found it useful to work on building important employability skills, such as communication and team working, by taking part in after-school activities.

As a Trainee Accountant, my day involves running the payroll for our clients, completing and submitting VAT returns and dealing with client queries. What I enjoy the most is the whole learning process - from helping others, to gaining experience and new skills. I work with a great bunch of people, which drives me to do the best I can every day, the same way my family has inspired me so far.

Before starting my higher apprenticeship, I didn’t really know what a career in accountancy involved and initially found it challenging to combine work, study and fitting in my social life. Over time, I have gained a better understanding of the profession and the responsibilities that come with it, and have achieved a healthy work-life balance that suits me.

To anyone considering their options after school, I would say that university isn’t always the right option for everyone. Consider all of your options and every opportunity that is in front of you; don’t write something off straight away. Do something you feel excited about!

In a few years’ time I hope to be a successful qualified ICAEW Chartered Accountant, with experience in working with a variety of different clients and cases.
