I always knew that I wanted to qualify as a Chartered Accountant. I didn’t really consider university, because taking the ICAEW Apprenticeship route would allow me to start the process at the earliest possible opportunity.

The majority of my day is spent on accounts production, ranging from depreciating fixed assets to calculating tax liabilities. However, there is a lot of variation involved in the accounting profession, so every day is different. I also work on bookkeeping, I produce management accounts and submit VAT returns.

There is a lot of hard work involved in a ICAEW Apprenticeship, because you have to find a way to balance work and study. But learning and gaining a worldwide recognised qualification, whilst earning at the same time, certainly makes it all worthwhile.

I would like to be a fully qualified ICAEW Chartered Accountant within the next five years, responsible for a portfolio of different clients and on my way to a managerial role.

It’s important to remember the bigger picture when it comes to your options after school. Focusing on what you want to achieve and staying motivated is the key to success.
