ICAEW Challenge lesson plan

Thank you for registering to download the lesson plan that will enable you to run the ICAEW Challenge in your classroom. The challenge aims to give students a taste of what it is like to work as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant and it can be used as preparation for students considering participating in BASE.

The Challenge

The ICAEW Challenge is structured in the same way as ICAEW’s BASE competition.

ICAEW provides you with a scenario outlining the challenges facing a fictional business - lifestyle magazine 'Newbie'.

In the Challenge you will ask students to analyse the scenario and provide solutions to the challenges facing Newbie.

Top tips for running the Challenge

Christopher Hawes, a tutor from My Kinda Future, developed the Challenge with ICAEW.

In this video he will talk you through how to run the ICAEW Challenge in your classroom and ensure your students get the most out of it.

Resources

  • Curriculum guide - shows which subjects and topics the challenge is aligned to.
  • Teacher pack - details on how to run the challenge and provides answer sheets for the tasks.
  • PowerPoint slides - to use in delivering the challenge in your classroom.
  • Student pack - background information for students including a glossary of terms.
  • Proposal sheets - details of the three proposals students need to consider in the second part of the challenge.

Bring a team to BASE

If your students enjoy this lesson then they’ll enjoy ICAEW’s annual BASE competition, where teams of six students compete against each other to provide the best solutions to a similar business problem. BASE is free to enter and there are more than 40 heats taking place across the UK each year. The heat winners are then pitted against each other at a national final where the overall champions are announced and presented with a cash prize.
