Matthew, Portfolio Manager, Thomas Westcott, Devon

At school I was unsure what to do as a career. I was being pushed towards university but it didn’t really appeal to me.

I therefore accepted a junior role within a small firm of chartered accountants which offered a day release course following the ACA syllabus thus enabling me to start the route to becoming a chartered accountant straight from school.

I now work as a portfolio manager at Thomas Westcott. I feel that the opportunities given through the ACA and the knowledge and experience I obtained has enabled me to become a competent manager at just 22. I do not feel that my career has suffered by taking an alternative route and not attending university; it certainly proved the right route for me.
