Looking for work experience?
Any business experience will have a great effect on your personal, social and career development. As well as developing your financial capability and technical skills, you will also develop other skills such as creativity, risk-taking and the drive to make ideas happen.
If your school/ college offer any form of work experience opportunities throughout the school year, make the most of it! It’s a great way to get an insight into the world of accountancy, or any career in business that you are looking to pursue.
Other benefits of work experience include:
- Establishing a network of contacts to be used in the future, maybe for further work-experience opportunities or to help with finding a job after school or graduation.
- Develop soft/employability skills such as building confidence, flexible communication and presentation skills.
- Fantastic addition to your CV, if applying for jobs straight from school or something to add on your personal statement if applying to university.
Sounds like quite a lot to obtain within two weeks, but that’s the beauty of following a structured work experience programme and you’ll get the support from your employer along the way. Tool kits are available from ICAEW, these help employers create a structured training programme allowing you to guarantee that you’ll be getting the most out of your work experience.
There are various exercises within the tool kit that will introduce you to accounts preparation, forming the basis of much of the work in an accountancy firm, and specific concepts and terminology used by accountants.
